Arrival in New Delhi

Day 2:
New Delhi Sightseeing
After leisurely breakfast we will explore New Delhi, an area designed and built by the British in the 1920’s. Drive past the government buildings and diplomatic enclave along the broad and majestic Rajpath followed by a visit to a Sikh Temple built in 1783 locally called Gurduwara Bangla Sahib.
In the early afternoon visit Humayun’s tomb UNESCO world heritage site. The tomb was built by his widow, in 1569, 14 years after his death, at a cost of 1.5 million rupees. It was later used for the burial of various members of the ruling family and contains some 150 graves. It has aptly been described as the necropolis of the Mughal dynasty.
Later in the afternoon explore the colorful markets of Delhi. In the evening enjoy a warm welcome dinner at the historical Lodi garden.

Day 3:
Old Delhi Sightseeing
After breakfast we will start our morning tour with a visit to 17th century Old Delhi. Visit the Jama Mosque, the royal mosque built by the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan in 1656. We will travel by bicycle rickshaw through the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk, the spine of Old Delhi that houses the spice market and jeweler’s lane and then drive past Red Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Later visit Raj Ghat, the memorial site of Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation in 1948. In black marble, surrounded by lawn and with an eternal flame burning, Raj Ghat remembers the man who is known as the Father of India. Later we will proceed for our lunch.
After lunch we will visit the UNESCO world heritage site, Qutab Minar. Located in the district of South Delhi, this magnificent monument in red and buff sandstone is the highest tower in India. Built in the early 13th century, the surrounding archaeological area contains funerary buildings, notably the magnificent Alai-Darwaza Gate, the masterpiece of Indo-Muslim art (built in 1311), and two mosques, including the Quwwatu’l-Islam, the oldest in northern India, built of materials reused from some 20 Brahman temples.

Day 4:
Delhi – Varanasi | The Holy Ganges
You will take a short flight to the holy city of Varanasi, one of India’s most sacred cities and the religious capital of Hinduism and one of the oldest living cities in the world. Arrive and transfer to our hotel.
In the early evening we will take a close look at the banks of the Ganges to witness the cremation site and devotional ceremony of Aarti performed by thousands of devout Hindus. The incredible chanting of prayers fills the air as does the rhythmic drumming and sounds of bells from temples across the Holy Ganges.

In 1915, the Brahmin King of Darbhanga (Bihar) ‘Rameshwar Singh Bahadur’ acquired the palace and the Ghat also came to be known as Darbhanga Ghat.The first sight of the hotel is its historical elevator, installed in 1918, built to help the Darbanga king climb the second floor of the palace, also boasts of being the first elevator of India. The architecture and the design of the palace are directly influenced by the erstwhile ruling dynasty of the Marathas. The sandstone walls and pillars graced with Maratha art accentuate the palace architecture. Also, you may notice, a betel leaf runner along the roof corners of the walls- a signature pattern followed by Marathas during the ancient time.

Day 5:
Varanasi | Sarnath Centre of Buddhist Learning
A memorable day ahead as we leave early in the morning to board our boat for a ride along the Ganges to see the bathing Ghats (river bank) & cremation site. We will watch the sunrise on the riverfront from a boat which can be a moving spiritual experience as you witness the worship and sites along the river. Life on the Ghats is bound by an endless string of rituals and the ever-changing aspects of the river and the wide landscapes throughout the area have fascinated visitors from all over the world. You will become entranced by the sights and sounds of those worshipping in this amazingly beautiful, mysterious, and ancient place. We will also visit Mother Teresa’s missionary before returning to the hotel for breakfast.
In the afternoon, we enjoy a guided excursion to Sarnath, a centre of Buddhist learning and the buried Buddhist city where Buddha preached his first sermon. After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha went to Sarnath and it was here that he preached his first discourse in the deer park and set in motion the ‘Wheel of the Dharma’. It is one of the most holy sites because it is believed that in this place the stream of the Buddha’s teaching first flowed. Sarnath was a renowned school of learning from the 16th century BC to the 12th century AD. Visit the ruins, the stupa, the Buddhist temple & the museum. See the Ashok Pillar at the museum with its four guardian lions, now the national emblem to acknowledge India’s independence.

Varanasi - Agra | The City of Taj Mahal
After breakfast transfer to the airport to board your flight to Delhi. Meet and assist upon arrival followed by a transfer by car to Agra.
Afternoon at leisure, later in the evening enjoy a live show, a fascinating play that depicts the saga of love and a memorable journey into history of Taj Mahal. The drama portrays the Mughal era in the 16th century. Agra & Taj Mahal
Early Morning – We will start our day at sunrise with a visit to one of the most incredible monuments ever built in the world. The Taj Mahal is a monument of love built between 1631 and 1648 by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife. The Taj Mahal is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage. Breakfast at your hotel.
After leisurely breakfast visit Agra Fort, a UNESCO World heritage site with imposing walls of red sandstone. The fort is almost two miles long and contains palaces, audience halls and mosques.

Day 8:
Agra & Fatehpur Sikri – Jaipur
After breakfast, we drive to Jaipur. en route visit the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri. Built by Emperor Akbar in 1569, this was the old capital of the Moghuls, which was abandoned after 15 years due to scarcity of water.
After lunch we will continue our driver towards Jaipur, the city of Jaipur owes its names, foundation and its careful planning to the great warrior, astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh II. In 1727, with Mughal power on the wane, Jai Singh decided to move down from his hillside fortress at nearby Amber to a new site on the plains. He laid out the city, with its surrounding walls and six rectangular blocks, according to the principles of town planning set down in Shilpa Shastra, an ancient Hindu treatise on architecture.

Day 9:
Jaipur | Amber Fort & Pink City
In the morning after breakfast, enjoy an excursion to Amber Fort including an elephant ride ascent to the fort. Along the way, we will have a photo stop at Hawa Mahal, the ornamental facade of the “Palace of Winds” which is a prominent landmark in Jaipur. Amber Fort is the classic romantic Rajasthani Fort Palace. Its construction was started by Man Singh I in 1592, and completed by his descendent Jai Singh I. Its forbidding exterior belies an inner paradise where a beautiful fusion of Mughal and Hindu styles finds its ultimate expression.
Next visit City Palace, a delightful blend of Mughal and traditional Rajasthani architecture. The City Palace sprawls over one-seventh of the area in the walled city. Also, visit Jantar Mantar. This is the largest and the best preserved of the five observatories built by Jai Singh II in different parts of the country. The observatory consisting of outsized astronomical instruments is still in use.
In the afternoon, there is time for shopping. Jaipur is world-famous for its precious and semi-precious stones, colorful fabrics, and block printing, which is a traditional heritage craft of the Jaipur.

Mumbai
After breakfast, you will explore the sounds and sights of Mumbai originally known as Bombay, visit the Gateway of India, an 85-foot-high arch whose design reflects India’s Muslim and Hindu traditions. Visit the Prince of Wales Museum and Mani Bhawan, a small museum dedicated to the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi. Later we will see the Dhobi Ghat, the largest open-air laundry in the world and witness hundreds of men and women hand-wash sheets and garments etc.
In the afternoon cruise from Mumbai Harbour to Elephanta Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Elephanta Island is the site of the magnificent Elephanta caves, containing beautiful carvings, sculptures, and a temple to the Hindu God, Lord Shiva. The island, being a commercial, military and religions center for centuries also has traces of early Buddhist culture. I would not describe the past two weeks as a vacation, but rather an amazing adventure in your beautiful country. The people were extremely friendly, the food was wonderful and it will difficult, if not impossible to describe to our friends and family the sounds, smells and sites that made this trip such a success. It must be said that Jazur's knowledge and efficiency contributed significantly to the success of the trip in every respect, he was a first class guide - a real "keeper!". If the minor communication problem was the only issue, then I would consider the organization first class .The complexities associated with this venture must be enormous. One minor glitch shows you can't be super-human all the time. In conclusion, many thanks for a truly great adventure. We will certainly recommend your services to friends and family.

Hi Nazir, This was the best vacation we could ever have hoped for. It was fabulous. The group was the best, we have made a lot of new friends. The service and the hotels were wonderful. Shah was the best tour guide we could have hoped for. This is the first escorted tour we have done but it exceeded all of our expectations. We have actually discussed with our group about booking another trip in 2020 with Shah as our guide to visit Bhutan, Nepal and Kashmir. We would like to discuss this sometime next year perhaps. Hello Nazir: Thank you for phoning today to enquire about our recent trip to India. I wanted to let you know that it was a wonderful trip. I felt like I was away for a month. We saw and learned so many things about India. The trip covered many interesting sights and sites – the wild tiger – the elephant ride (never again – I saw them running free in Kenya) – the temples – the pedicab ride in Old Delhi – the Mahatma Gandhi Museum – the history of India as told by our guide, Sandeep Sing. Sandeep was a wonderful, caring person with a wealth of knowledge whose contribution enhanced the trip. The group we travelled with were all lovely people. The hotels were wonderful – the food was wonderful – it was a great trip. I particularly admired the Delhi drivers – what wonderful, patient people they were. Our bus driver was an amazing driver – we never felt in danger. In Delhi, we felt very well cared for by Rajeet. I would recommend this trip to anyone I speak to. Sincerely,

Thank you for the lovely message welcoming us home! Our tour to India was fantastic! We had a wonderful group of fun, enthusiastic and outgoing traveling companions. Tom and I were happy that we had chosen to arrive a day early as it gave us a chance to rest up before the tour, do some exploring on our own and also meet some of the others on tour. I must say, that we were very impressed with the way that we were greeted and escorted throughout the trip, from the warm welcome we had on our first day with Manzoor and Raj to the last drop off at the airport traveling home. We even took advantage of exchanging Canadian dollars into rupees using the “Karnai Bank”! Every detail was looked after. Our guide for the northern portion of the tour, Ashish, was the perfect host; knowledgeable, accommodating, and entertaining. The experience of seeing the historical sights, sampling the various dishes and immersing ourselves into this colourful culture exceeded our expectations. We can’t say enough about how well the itinerary was planned with enough time to see the sights and enjoy some down time back at the hotel. We found the accommodations to be top notch, comfortable, offering a wide selection of food items and almost all had free wifi available. We were pleased to have had the opportunity to see both the north and south of India. Thank you Nazir for suggesting the additional tour to Kerala. It is a totally different side of India that we would have otherwise missed. We absolutely loved the beautiful mountain vistas of the terraced tea plantations and the time spent on the houseboat touring the backwaters was magical. What a great way to end our stay! The only suggestion that I can offer at this time is to build in some extra time at the beautiful resorts in which we stayed. It would have been wonderful to take advantage of the services they offered, especially at the Spice Village Resort. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Mandira for helping us organize this excursion and for helping us navigate through the process of acquiring an Indian visa. This was our second consecutive trip with Explore India. Our first trip with Explore India was in 2017 to the Rajasthan area. We loved our trip and really didn’t think any other part of India could be any better. We were wrong. Southern India blew us away. We combined stops to both rural & urban sights in India. We started in Chennai and departed in Bangalore. In between we had an experience of a lifetime. Nazir had arranged a driver for our trip of 25 days as we did not want to travel by plane or train. Our driver for 25 days, Rajesh, anticipated our every need, from beverages to laundry. He was outstanding & so very patient as we were often late meeting him. He would also offer up information on the local flora & fauna. We always felt safe with Rajesh. The accommodations booked by Nazir were outstanding. -We loved the Ocean view room at Radisson Blu in Mahabalipuram. The beach & grounds were incredible. The gym was an extra bonus. -The Maison Perumal in Pondicherry was wonderful. The hotel was in the heart of the city so we were able to walk everywhere. I loved the hotel cooking classes. Our room was a huge suite- we loved it. -The Hotel Svatma in Tanjore was outstanding. My only complaint is that we didn’t stay another night. I would go back to Tanjore just to relax there again & enjoy the food. -The Heritage Madurai was another outstanding hotel. The rooms were a little worn but the food & service were outstanding. -Periyar, The Spice Village was so beautiful. Again I loved the cooking classes, the nature ( complete with monkeys & Guinea Hens roaming on the property) & that our driver took me to shops to purchase local spices & shawls at a fraction of what I would have paid elsewhere. The trip up the mountains was beautiful. We were truly staying in the jungle. Our ride on the elephant was wonderful, the shower my husband had from the elephant was amazing. After we were able to wash the elephant. It was an experience of a lifetime! -Kumarakom Lake Resort was again amazing. We could’ve stayed there several weeks. It was so relaxing, the Lake serene. The service & food great. We also really appreciated the personal trainer at the gym. -Alleppey – the houseboat was good but not outstanding, but I think that was our mistake. We should’ve booked a higher end boat. However, the scenery couldn’t get any better. It was a relaxing trip down the waterways. We loved it and felt safe the entire time. -Mararikulam- Having travelled extensively I was surprised to see the beaches in Maraikulam match those of Hawaii, the Caribbean and South Pacific. The beach was unpolluted. There were a few fishermen & local dogs that were hanging out. -Cochin- This was an amazing city. We loved the history & energy there. The hotel was great. -Wayanad-Our stay at the Parison Tea Plantation was incredible. My husband & I got lost wandering in the tea plantation fields. We asked some locals to point us in the right direction. Our room at the Inn was amazing. The tour of the tea plantation & it’s history was great. we’re still enjoying the tea every morning back in Vancouver. -Kabani- where do I begin. This resort blew us away. The accommodations were outstanding as was the food. The staff made us feel like rock stars. However, it was the abundance of wildlife that left us speechless. It was stunning. The elephants, deer, wild dogs, birds, river otters. We felt like we were on a National Geographic expedition. We loved the ease of going on either a boat or jeep to see the wildlife. Sadly we didn’t see a tiger or leopard but we knew they were in the area as other tourists showed us their stunning photos from the day before. -Mysore- great city with many temples to see. The hotel Radisson Blu was lovely. I really liked the fact that leopards would hang out in the area we were staying! -Bangalore- fantastic hotel. I loved the historical tour and seeing the resident turkeys. Our suite was amazing, complete with flower petal designs outside our door. We were treated like royalty. Our only regret from our trip is that we will never have better food or service than what we had in India. So we’ll just have to book our 3rd trip with this outstanding company. Liz Legge

Hi Nazir: I meant to respond to you before now, but a number of work and family issues have taken my time and attention. First of all, let me say that I enjoyed my trip immensely. Indeed, it will take me considerable time to digest the experience. India is so different in every way (and then some) from Canada. We were exposed to the culture, history, life, architecture and spiritual side of India while being protected from the extreme change. Your guides were all experts, sensitive to individual and group needs, but able to keep the tour moving. Sandeep was especially good. I feel I have truly been absorbed into India and its way of life. The guides in Nepal were also excellent, and they were so proud of their country. Our guide there took us to the home of a friend for a "cooking" experience. They were such a nice family and so hospitable. They offered real insight into traditional family life, but also the younger generation's energy to get ahead. The guide's friend (who had trained with him for his guiding certificate/license) also owns a coffee shop in the old part of the city and her husband is in medical school. The whole family (his parents, brother and the couple) lives in a very modest 3 level apartment under conditions Canadians would complain about. Still, they were so generous, friendly and hospitable. I never felt vulnerable or in danger the whole time. I'm sure this was carefully managed by the guides. Still, people were genuinely friendly, in spite of the fact that we were obviously naive and privileged westerners. The hotels were all top notch. It was wonderful to be able to hole into some western comfort at the end of the day. The Delhi hotels near the airport were very nice and appreciated when air travel was involved. The hotel in Udaipur was charming and unique - what an experience! I think Udaipur is my favourite city in India. All in all, it was a wonderful experience that I will never forget - a once in a lifetime experience. You can be proud of what you have achieved. From a traveller's perspective, it was excellent value with all one could ask from a tour. We especially liked Yuvrage who is an interesting young man, our driver and our driver's assistant all of whom I thought were exceptional. On the other hand the staff at Le Meridien in New Delhi went above board in helping us when my son was feeling ill. They were very understanding and sympathetic.
