Arrive Chennai – Mahabalipuram
Welcome to Incredible India! Upon your, at Chennai International airport you will meet your Explore India representative and transfer to Mahabalipuram.
The rest of the day is for you to spend at your leisure.
Chennai formerly known as Madras. Chennai boats of a long history from British East India Company, through the British rule to its evolution in the late 20th century. The city is a home to Fort St. George, which was built in 1644, the fort is now been converted into a museum showcasing the city’s roots as a British military garrison and East India Company trading post, this is when it was called Madras.

Day 4:
Mahabalipuram – Pondicherry
After breakfast, you will leave for Mahabalipuram for a day of sightseeing.
Mahabalipuram – It occupies a stunning position on a rocky outcrop between the beach and a lagoon. Built by the Pallava rulers in the seventh century, the complex is comprised of 14 cave temples, 9 monolithic “Rathas”, 3 stone temples and 2 relief sculptured rock panels. These two rock panels give a graphic description of Arjuna’s penance when he prayed for the powers of Shiva and forms the largest Bass Relief in the world. Particularly of interest is the shore temple built on the water’s edge with an east-facing altar designed to catch the rising Sun. This has now been declared a World Heritage Site.
Later, drive to Pondicherry (or Puducheri) meaning ’the new settlement’. It was a French settlement comprising of Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam besides Pondicherry. A unique fact about Pondicherry is that it spreads into several states. Upon arrival check in to your hotel.

Day 5:
Pondicherry
After breakfast, proceed for a sightseeing tour of Pondicherry. Pondicherry covers the Sri Aurobindo which grew out of a small community where Sri Aurobindo lived for the most parts of his life in the nearby Vinayagar temple which was later dedicated to Lord Ganesha
Later, take a Cycle Rickshaw Ride through the streets of Pondicherry and sign off the day with a stroll through the 1.5 Km long Promenade Beach.

Day 6:
Pondicherry - Tanjore
After breakfast, you will transfer to Tanjore with a visit to Chidambaram on the way. Chidambaram is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. You will explore the beautiful temple prior to arriving in Thanjavur. Continue on to Thanjavur.
Thanjavur is an important center of South Indian religion, art, and architecture. Most of the great living Chola temples are UNESCO World Heritage monuments. Thanjavur is also home to a unique style of paintings which are related to the religion. You will discover this ancient city which has a history of more than 1200 years.

Day 7:
Tanjore – Chettinad
Enjoy a morning city sightseeing tour of Tanjore which was the capital of the Chola Empire from the tenth to the fourteenth centuries. A Chola king held the throne from 985 to 1016, built the greatest of the empire’s 74 temples, the Brahadeeswarar, with its soaring tower over the inner sanctum. This tower rises more than 62 meters (200 feet) and on its dome rests a single block of granite weighing 80 tons.
Later, continue on to Chettinad. Check in to a hotel at Chettinad.In the afternoon enjoy a local tour of the famous fortress and temples that are architectural marvels in Chettinad. This rural town houses many stylish heritage homes, which took years to build, and has courtyards, halls, and corridors that are quiet, cool and beautifully decorated with intricate artwork, Burmese teak, and Italian marble.
Later in the afternoon see local artisans in the weaving center and experience the art of clay tile making where local ladies and men still practice the age-old weaving techniques.

Day 8:
Chettinad - Madurai
After an early breakfast, proceed for a bullock cart ride, a unique experience. Time for a “selfie” with the milky white bulls and their master.
Later, continue driving to Madurai on arrival check-in at hotel
In the evening visit the Meenakshi temple to attend a ceremony where the marriage of Meenakshi ( Parvati ) and Sundareshwara (Lord Shiva) is solemnized.

Day 9:
Madurai
After breakfast, proceed for a sightseeing tour. You will visit the Meenakshi Temple. Evidence of the temple has been found dating back from early A.D. The temple was almost completely destroyed in the year 1310 following the invasion of the Islamic conqueror Malikkapur. As kings who were followers of Islam were noted for their intolerance towards other religions, the invaders destroyed most of the ancient sculptures of the temple.

After breakfast, we will leave for Munnar. a breathtakingly beautiful place of peace and tranquility. A gateway to the South of India, Munnar was the favored summer resort area of British rulers in the colonial days. On the way, you will also witness the stunning waterfalls in Cheeyappara. Day 11:
Munnar
After breakfast, discover Munnar. This hill station was once the summer resort of the British Government in South India. Visit the sprawling tea plantations, picture-book towns, winding lanes and holiday facilities make this a popular resort town. Among the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here is the Neelakurinji. This flower which bathes the hills in blue once in every twelve years will bloom next in 2018. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, which towers over 2,695 m. Anamudi is an ideal spot for trekking.

Day 12:
Munnar – Periyar
In the morning we leave for Thekkady. Upon arrival, we check –in at the hotel.
In the afternoon you will enjoy a boat ride at Lake Periyar where you will also be able to view the wildlife.
Traveling by boat on the lake is the usual way of touring the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Situated in the Thekkady district of Tamil Nadu bordering with Kerala, Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary is one of the most important and frequently visited areas in India. It conveniently falls between journeys from different parts of Tamil Nadu to important tourist destinations in Kerala. Trips along the large artificial lake surrounded by dense forests are by itself value for money besides offering the opportunity to view wildlife especially elephants, wild boar, sambar, etc.
In the afternoon we will proceed for a spice plantation visit. A walk through the plantation opens up a vista of pristine greenery shrouded by low hanging clouds, gurgling brooks and a pale shadow of the Western Ghats in the backdrop. Later you will be taken on tour covering cardamom, pepper, rubber, vanilla, coffee and tea plantations. The most abundantly found spice in Thekkady is pepper, but you will also see a variety of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric and curry leaves on the slanting slopes of the spice plantation. You will have an opportunity to spice shop and be able to prepare delectable Indian cuisine back home.

Periyar - Alleppey
After an early breakfast, we will leave for Alleppey to board Kettuvallam (Houseboat) for cruising on backwaters.
The backwaters of Kerala is a stunning feature that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. A glide in a “Kettuvallam” (Houseboat) through the enchanting backwaters is sure to be a memorable experience. It is as though you are another world, a world so quiet and serene that you never want to step on a dry land again. You will see the swaying brush which is the backdrop of the sparkling emerald greens backwaters. The magical beauty will steal your heart and heal your mind and body.

Day 14:
Alleppey - Cochin
Around 0900hrs disembark from the houseboat in Alleppey and proceed for Cochin, the “Queen of the Arabian Sea” is one of the most interesting cities in India and has one of the finest natural harbors in the world.
On the way visit Kumbalangi Village. Kumbalangi is a village located 13 kilometers away from Cochin and is identified as the first model fisheries and tourism village in India. On arrival at the village, we will board a country boat where you get the best views of village life you may see a local woman tending to her shop, a farmer in his paddy field, or a fisherman spreading his net. After a tour of the village, we will stop for lunch.
After lunch, we take an entertaining ‘tuk-tuk’ ride through the narrow country roads back to our transportation spot. We will head back to the hotel where you can have a leisurely afternoon of relaxing or you may want to head out to do some shopping if you so wish.

Day 15:
Cochin
After a leisurely breakfast, we will discover Cochin. We will visit different sites today such as the Paradesi Synagogue, Dutch Palace, and the St. Francis Church. This church was built in 1510 by friars brought to India by Vasco da Gama and was the first European church built in India.
In the evening we will be entertained at the Greenix Show. The Greenix show is a kaleidoscope of Indian classical art forms and martial arts. Showcasing magnificent vignettes of Kerala’s rich cultural traditions, Kaleidoscope Kerala is an exclusive, uniquely choreographed repertoire of live classical dance and music. Explore India, October 26 – November 8, 2016, Magical India The trip was wonderful, interesting and educational. Most important we had an amazing Tour Guide in “Arvind Sharma”. We have done many tours while traveling to 108 countries around the world and Arvind is the best we have ever had. He is passionate about his country, religion, beliefs, Indian history and all the different religious groups that live in India. One of the highlights of the trip was the last minute visit to meet his family. Rajeev Sharma did an excellent job on making last minute arrangements for some of our tour members while making sure we are all happy. He does a great job of singing “Jingle Bells”. Hotels: We were pleased with all the hotels. Bus Drivers were excellent. The places we visited were very enlightening with history; the country's infrastructure, roads, and bridges are way behind other countries. Thank you for an amazing trip

Hello Nazir! Where do we begin?? Bill and I had a fabulous introduction to India on our tour with Explore India! Upon our early arrival we were met by our local guide Muzzafar Hamid Shah, who was ready to help with information, currency exchange and sightseeing outings! We took him up on those straight away and headed out to see and hear a bit about Delhi. We later had the pleasure of meeting your brother who gave us a bit of history of the company and laid down the concept of being family. And that is how it unfolded for us. We had a wonderful group of 17 diverse Canadians- warm, adventurous, funny, punctual! , generous, curious, - and we soon became a family, led by Shah- who we cannot say enough about! Shah was so caring, informative- so knowledgeable- he really made the history so interesting, also describing life in India today, education, healthcare issues, social issues, differences and similarity of the religions....our days were so full and so fun. He always kept us informed as to what was coming up, saved us from the ‘hawkers’ by providing the ‘on bus shopping’ which we loved! Also giving assistance as required or requested when we shopped the awesome artisan locations. These stops were truly amazing opportunities to see the old world techniques of carpet making, marble inlay, silk weaving, block fabric design, etc. Shah is such a great guide - we hope EXPLORE INDIA knows how lucky you are to have him! He was such a big part of the enjoyment and success of our trip. The itinerary was incredible- one could never arrange all this on your own. In casual conversation we all asked what were the highs and lows...no lows...and it was just too difficult to choose the highs! Of course the sights were magnificent- the Taj Mahal did not disappoint-it truly was beyond belief! As were the many other palaces, forts, temples! Our visit to the Sikh Temple was such a lovely, impressive event. It was like stepping back in time to watch the food prep by so many volunteers and the feeling was something spiritual... I’m sure you’ve probably heard about our super successful tiger safari at Ranthambore!! A tiger family plus a sloth bear!! We felt blessed that day and it was obvious, by our Naturalist, Vijay’s excitement, just how fortunate we were. He could have headed out after our initial tiger sighting as our time was closing in, but he ventured after another sighting, successfully predicting where the tigers were heading! After an incredible time watching them we had to hustle out of the park to meet our deadline. As we understand, putting himself at risk of fine or suspension of licence! The Ganges experience was beyond words and a part of India I will keep with me forever! Indescribable, really. As Bill has said numerous times- our visit to India was not just a vacation- it was an experience.... So many things to mention, but most come down to the people and just seeing everyday life go by..... the visit with the village family was very special, the time spent at the village school so precious.... and just observing life along the roadside was spellbinding. I could go on about many more things- the accommodations were great, the food was fantastic! Our family extended to our driver and helper who we were so happy to see on our return to Delhi! They also, took such great care of us! We have and will not hesitate to highly recommend Explore India to anyone thinking of going and will encourage anyone else to seriously consider India for their next ‘experience’! A wonderful experience, you made good choices for our itinerary. The hotels were great, the guides were full of knowledge. The greenhouse resort amazing, perhaps an extra night there would be a great addition, the palace in Deoghar could have an extra night too! The marigold hotel was a truly fantastic experience, one I'll never forget. Tell Rajeev it was a memorable trip. He took great care getting us to and from airport, we really appreciated the extra effort.

Namaste, and thanks for the email Nazir. My husband and I are still under the powerful influence of India – having thoroughly enjoyed the 2 weeks we had there. It’s really difficult to synthesize our experience but I will try to give some feedback. Both of us felt that we learned so much and really broadened our understanding of cultural and political issues in addition to seeing, tasting, smelling, and tasting some of India’s diversity. I really appreciated the diverse environments: urban, heritage sites, forest reserve, streets/river exposure in Varanasi, the roadside rural life viewed as we traveled between major sites. I’m especially glad that we added on the Varanasi trip which broadened our experience considerably. We were ever so fortunate in the timing (just after the monsoon season) and got to see a relatively ‘green’ India. Several local guides commented that we were a ‘lucky’ group in terms of being in the right places at the right times for certain things – such as seeing tigers, getting to the Taj Mahal just prior to its ‘mudding’. The tour itinerary was well planned and varied – given that any group of 22 people will have different preferences. We found our tour guide to be excellent: knowledgeable, flexible, and always anticipating when/where changes might be needed either for our comfort or safety. Many thanks for that. And he was ever so patient in spite of challenging situations. I’m a cautious traveller (in contrast to my husband) but even I felt very safe. Our guide was extremely good at keeping us together while also allowing plenty of photo ops, cooling down periods, and preparing us for the next point of interest. The tour guide was very good with history and cultural information that made the bus travel time both informative and seem shorter. All contacts were very friendly, courteous, and helpful. One hardly mentioned an issue and it was addressed; To summarize, the trip was amazing! We are so very glad we went and still bask in India’s glow. We had a FABULOUS time in India. Our hotels were very comfortable and the food selection was excellent. Every aspect of the trip went smoothly and Rajiv and Yajur were both wonderful. Rajiv greeted us and explained everything really well and then was there to say farewell. Yajur was knowledgeable, funny, helpful...just all-round a great tour guide. He even arranged for Ian to go into town and buy a cricket bat And the itinerary was excellent - lots of variety and lots of information. We will tell all our friends that Explore India is the way to visit. I'll ask Ian tonight if he has any extra feedback and let you know. Hi Nazir, Sorry, it has taken me so long to reply, we really felt the jet-lag on our return! We were very happy with our experiences with Explore India. It was a fantastic trip, we learned a lot and had a lot of fun with our fellow travellers. We started the trip with an extension to Nepal. Our guide, Bikash, was a very caring man. When he found out it was our anniversary he had the hotel deliver a cake to our room. Bikash was also very supportive of one of the members of our tour who had unfortunately picked the wrong visa for India (single entry) and could not get on the plane with us to return to India. Bikash actually purchased his new plane ticket because the ATM's would not work for our fellow traveller. The sites of Nepal were amazing, in particular, the cremations on the river and when we toured a local village we actually got to go into a local school - this was very exciting because 6 of the 7 tourists were former teachers! The tour of India was really complete due to the amazing knowledge of our guide, Sundeep. Sundeep was an excellent story teller and helped weave an amazing knowledge of India, its history and the present day conditions. We were fortunate to be able to participate in many Diwali celebrations, especially in Varanasi where we saw some amazing sites. We would recommend Explore India for any of our friends. The hotel accommodations were all terrific, the tours went smoothly and we were always supported by our guides. It was an amazing experience and one we will cherish forever. Thank you

Hi Nazir, it was such a fabulous experience, we had a fantastic time, can hardly believe it’s over! Not only was the tour amazing, the other 6 (we were really lucky) in the group were excellent. The food and the hotels were top notch, excellent value for our dollar. We loved how `things were taken care of``, we just had to have our bags outside the room, what service !!!! I know we will be seeing Mark and Anita here in Victoria. May even travel with them !!

Hello, Nazir. I thought I would drop you a note with some comments on our trip to India. As you know, I was quite apprehensive about the trip before we left, partly because I knew it was going to be a completely new experience for us, and also because of the alerts about the unusually high levels of pollution and the demonetization announcement by Prime Minister Modi which took effect just before we left Vancouver. (From an outsiders point of view, it appeared that the people most negatively affected by this drastic move were the “have nots”, rather than those who were the primary target.) I will begin by saying that this trip was truly the most memorable travelling experience we have ever had. We will never forget the sights, the sounds, the people, the colour, the life. The biggest highlight for us was Varanasi (all aspects of the city and the sights, but especially going out on the River Ganges both in the evening and again at sunrise the next morning.). It was like stepping into a different world. I am so glad you suggested that we go there. It truly does have a spiritual feeling. A bonus for us was seeing parts of two weddings that took place at our hotel when we were there. We had never seen an Indian wedding before, and the decorations, music, and colourful dress were fun and entertaining to watch. The tour we took with our guide, Ada, to one of the slums in Mumbai was also an eye-opening and unforgettable experience. Seeing the recycling of mountains of “garbage; watching the men sewing fabrics in small rooms; having the children play and wave and smile at us (but not asking for money); observing the making of pottery and the use of what appeared to be homemade kilns; watching the preparations for a birthday party with many of the neighbours joining in to help; and on and on. We had expected an atmosphere of Despair, but instead felt that this was a vibrant, active community, despite the basic nature of the housing and the lack of so many amenities we take for granted. We have no way of knowing if this slum was representative of the many other slums which were apparent in some of the cities we visited, but we will not forget it. We also loved Jaipur and are glad we spent an extra day there. The elephant ride up to the Amber Fort with its wonderful views out over the countryside; the observatory with its enormous and precision instruments; watching the full process of carpet making including weaving, scraping, washing, burning of the fibers with a blow torch; and hand washing (hard work); another wedding which we spent watching by the pool at the beautiful Taj hotel; the street scenes with people, animals, merchants, crazy traffic – all of it was wonderful. We had expected to be impressed with the Taj Mahal in Agra (and we were), but we actually enjoyed the “baby Taj” just as much – fewer people, and our excellent guide pointed out the beauty in the chiseled flower and other patterns in the marble (and we later had a chance to see how this was done). Walking through Old Delhi was also a fascinating experience, as was our visit to the Sikh Temple, and the beautiful monuments and buildings in New Delhi. The Taj Hotels were great, and I doubt if we will ever see a more beautiful hotel than the Taj Palace in Mumbai. If I had to choose again, I would have chosen the Taj Hotel in Delhi, rather than the Meridian (which was very nice, but had more of a feel of a business hotel). Our guides were also great – all different, but really good at explaining what we were seeing and giving us the history of all the places we visited. It was hard to take it all in, but we really appreciated their enthusiasm. Special kudos go to our guide in Varanasi (Prem?) and in Mumbai (Ada?), but they were all good. Khalid was also very hard-working, sincere, and we really appreciated his extra efforts on our behalf throughout. We were very sorry about the additional work we caused when we left our suitcase at the airport in Mumbai and really appreciated the time and effort of everyone who helped us get it back. Anyway, this is a long story, but we really wanted you to know how much we appreciated all your ongoing encouragement and efforts, and those of the people who work with and for you. If it had not been for you, we never would have gone to India and we would have missed the experience of a lifetime. We will definitely tell all of our friends that Explore India is the way to go and that India should be on their bucket list. Many of our friends figured if we could do it, they could do it. And we did it! Thanks again Nazir. We hope to get back to India in a couple of years, and maybe Nepal (and Kashmir when it is more settled). At that time, we will be in touch. Best regards,
